Lake Como, Italy

On my final day of the trip I decided to do a day trip to Lake Como because I really wanted to see the lake and all the luxury hotels and million dollar mansions. I booked my tour with Viator, I think it was $110 for the day.

There were about 60 other tourists in my group. They picked us up in a huge bus from the tourism office in Milan and drove us 2 hours to the lake. We then did a 1 hour boat ride around the lake, probably my favorite part of the day. Then the boat dropped us off in the village of Bellagio and we had 2 hours of free time to wander and eat lunch. From there we got back on the bus and drove another 1.5 hours to the town of Como where we had one hour of free time to wander. Then another 1.5 hours back on the bus to Milan.

We left Milan at 8:30 AM and got back around 7:30 PM. Even though it was mostly bus time, I feel like I got a good introduction to the area. I would love to go back one day, stay in one of the small villages, and spend a few days on the lake.

Grand Hotel Tremezzo – famous 5 star hotel that costs more than $1,000 per night to stay!

All the houses are built front facing the lake which is unique. They were all so beautiful.
Apparently this mansion was the filming location of a James Bond movie and Star Wars

Villa Melzi

The pictures below are from Villa Melzi, this villa is a short walk from the village of Bellagio. It was 10 euros to enter and walk the grounds. I would recommend it. The gardening/landscaping alone are impressive. Plus you get great views of the lake everywhere you look.

This villa was built as a summer residence for Francesco Melzi d’Eril, vice president of the Italian Republic founded by Napoleon in the early 1800s.

Beautiful landscaping

The villa itself is a private residence, so you can’t go inside.

Bellagio

Our second stop of the day was the village of Bellagio. Instagram has made this spot super famous, and with that I can say it has now become overrun with tourists sadly. The streets were packed making it not so pleasant to walk around. The little alleyways were beautiful, so I do get the appeal.

Probably the most famous “Instagram shot” of Bellagio that made everyone flock to this destination.

Como

Our last stop of the day was the town of Como itself. Very touristy, it’s the gateway city to the rest of Lake Como so it makes sense. We only had an hour here so I just walked around and found myself some gelato.

Como cathedral
Last gelato of the trip, pistachio and salted caramel. Probably my favorite combo.
